Pwani University

Pwani University is situated in Kilifi County, in the scenic resort town of Kilifi about 60 km north of Mombasa and adjacent to the Indian Ocean. The University sits on about 239 hectares of land. The University was established initially as a constituent College of Kenyatta University by a gazette order issued on 23rd August, 2007, with a mandate to, “provide quality education, training, research and innovation for the advancement of the individual and society”. The University is directed in its development agenda by its Master Plan and a 10-year Strategic Plan launched in 2010 and subsequently revised in 2014. The institution has made major strides in putting in place the required infrastructure to mount quality degree programs, and was granted a Charter to become a Chartered University on 31st January 2013. Currently, the University has a student population of about 8,000 (eight thousand).

The University was established at a time of rapid changes in the higher education sector in Kenya and the World, which provided both challenges and opportunities.

The rapid growth in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT’s) has opened up new opportunities in teaching and learning, especially Open Distance

and e-Learning (ODeL). Pwani University intends to make use of the emerging technologies to enhance access and equity and improve quality in University Education.

Currently, Pwani University has a total of seven (7) Schools namely:

  • School of Agricultural Sciences and Agribusiness (SASA),
  • School of Business and Economics (SBE),
  • School of Education (SED),
  • School of Environmental and Earth Sciences (SEES),
  • School of Health and Human Sciences SHHS),
  • School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS), and the
  • School of Pure and Applied Sciences (SPAS).

The University will continue to be guided in the development of its curriculum by the needs of industry and advances in knowledge in the world in general.
